Fr. Bart Geger, SJ

Fr. Barton Geger, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, entered the Jesuit order in 1990. He received a MA in Philosophy from Saint Louis University, a MTh in Systematic Theology from Heythrop College in London, a licentiate from the (then) Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, MA, and a STD in Theology from Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid. He is a research scholar at the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College, and assistant professor of the practice at BC’s School of Theology and Ministry. He is general editor of the journal Studies in the Spirituality of Jesuits.

Most recently he produced a new edition of the autobiography of St. Ignatius Loyola, entitled A Pilgrim’s Testament. People today tend to overemphasize Ignatius’ innovations when it comes to prayer and discernment of God’s will, and they do not realize how much he owed to the Catholic tradition before him. So in this new edition,  Fr. Bart notes many of the allusions that he makes to the saints’ classic teachings on these subjects, to classical Christian literature like The Golden Legend and The Imitation of Christ.
